North Village Move-In Details

Overall North Village Move-In Information

We are excited to have you join the North Village residential community. The following information and resources will be helpful as you pack and prepare to move into your residence hall space in North Village.

Move-In Appointments

Each student will be assigned a specific move-in appointment (date and time). Students will be asked to login to the HornetHousing Portal to confirm their time, change their appointment, or request an alternate arrival (early or late arrival).

Move-In Locations

  • Fall move-in: All North Village students will come to the Harper Alumni Center for their assigned move-in appointment. All students must check in at the Harper Alumni Center first before going to North Village to move their belongings in. If a student chooses a move-in appointment outside of the defined move-in dates/times, that student will go directly to their residence hall for check-in.
  • Spring and Summer move-in: All students will check in directly at their residence hall front desk.

Requesting Alternate Arrivals

Any North Village student who needs to arrive early due to extenuating circumstances must complete the online request form in HornetHousing Portal. Your request for early move-in will be reviewed by staff. When approved or denied, additional information will be emailed to you. Additional rates and policies will apply. Any student requesting to move in late will still be subject to all housing rent and board charges from the start of the license agreement.

Fall 2024 Move-in FAQ

North Village residents are assigned a specific move-in date and check-in appointment time based on their classification and building assignment. Move-in dates and check-in appointments will be staggered to facilitate traffic in parking lots and buildings. Check-in appointments will be emailed by early August to your Sac State email (@0478yigou.com) and posted on your HornetHousing Portal. If possible, please maintain flexibility as you make travel plans while awaiting your official move-in date and check-in appointment.

As a friendly reminder, family members or friends may not check-in for you, but once you receive your move-in appointment you may submit a request for an alternative arrival that best meets your schedule (Fees may apply).

Know what you should bring and not bring with you to campus.

On the move-in page under “What to Bring” and “What Not to Bring”, we provide a list of items we suggest you bring with you as well as a list of items that you should not bring, as they are prohibited.

Be prepared to log in to HornetHousing Portal

At check-in, staff will request for you to log-into the HornetHousing Portal and pull up a QR code. When you are about to check-in, please pull up the HornetHousing Portal. The QR code will be located on the homepage after you log in.

If you will not have a phone available to you, please bring your Sacramento State OneCard or a Government Issued ID.

We do recommend you always have your OneCard available as it is the official photo identification card for all hornets. It also serves various other campus functions such as your library card, access card for campus sporting and social events, and public transit card. The OneCard photo also serves as the photo utilized to generate residential student Meal Cards for accessing their housing meal plan.

For more information, on how to get a card, or replace a card visit The OneCard online.

Have a Packing Plan

Pack with a purpose. For example, try leaving clothing on hangers and storing them in large trash bags, creating a plastic garment bag. Your clothing will be easily transported and then placed right into your closet/wardrobe when you arrive.

Pack sustainably using reusable storage containers and bags that can be used as room storage or can be returned home with family. These measures help reduce environmental waste.

Pack lightly as space is limited. We recommend bringing only what you absolutely need. Avoid bringing duplicate items by connecting and coordinating with roommates or suitemates on items you agree to share (e.g., MicroFridge, TVs). Remember if you have a hard time making everything fit, you might be bringing too much stuff!

Beginning August 1, the Hornet Mail Center will accept and log packages for students assigned to live in North Village for the upcoming Fall term. Students will be able to access the Hornet Mail Center only after they have officially checked into their room for the Fall. To locate your residence hall address, please log onto your HornetHousing Portal and visit the MyHousing webpage.

Yes, all bicycles shall be stored in one of the North Village storage enclosures or one of the external bike racks located throughout the North Village community. Please come prepared with a proper lock and chain to assist in securing your bike when stored on campus. For campus resources for Bicyclist please visit The Bike Shop and UTAPS for campus bike lane maps and standards.

E-Scooters and E-Bikes can be stored and charged in the Jenkins Hall Bike Compound. E-Scooters and E-Bikes are not permitted to be stored and charged inside the residential community.

During our main move-in day you should expect to be amongst many people. On Thursday, August 22 we anticipate up to 2000 residents and their families moving in.

University Housing Services will stagger move-in appointments so that there is a steady flow and minimal wait times. We ask that you arrive as close to your scheduled move-in appointment as possible. If you are stuck in traffic and arriving later than expected, you will not need to call our office.

Please also plan for hot temperatures and bright sunny days. During August, our temperatures can range in the 90s and 100s. Please bring water to stay hydrated. We encourage you to bring a reusable drinking vessel as each hall is equipped with either a water fountain or water bottle refill station. In addition, consider wearing lighter clothing, hats, and sunglasses to combat the heat and sun.

While moving belongings in, you may experience crowds in the lobbies, hallways, stairwells, and elevators, as people work to place belongings in their rooms. We will provide designated locations outside of each residence hall, allowing for the proper disposal of trash and packing materials.

Yes. Each student may bring family members and guests to assist with move-in.

Moving bins also known as “Herky Carts” will be available for check-out at each of the residence halls. Herky Carts are large rolling carts that you can place your belongings in and transport from your car to your building. It is not recommended to lift Herky Carts up the stairs.

If you are moving into our traditional residence halls (Klamath, Sierra, Draper, Jenkins, or Desmond Halls) we recommend you bring your own dolly or hand truck for heavier items as the second and third floors of these residence halls are only accessible via stairs (these buildings do not have elevators).

Only Riverview Hall and American River Courtyard offer accessibility via stairs and elevators. Riverview Hall and American River Courtyard offer three elevators each. Herky Carts and personal dollies are still recommended in conjunction with our elevators for ease of moving items into your room.

That depends on the day.

If your move-in appointment is on Thursday, August 22nd from 7 am-6 pm, please go to the Harper Alumni Center to complete your check-in process and get your move-in packet and unloading permit. Once you depart the Harper Alumni Center, you’ll head to your residence hall in North Village. Please use the designated route to avoid unnecessary re-routing delays.

If your move-in appointment is after 6 pm on Thursday, August 22nd or on Friday, August 23rd through Sunday, August 25th, go directly to your residence hall in North Village to check in and pick up your move-in packet and unloading permit. When you first arrive at your residence hall, please do not unload your vehicle(s) until you have completed the initial check-in process.

After arriving at your designated unloading area, please make sure the unloading permit is visible and that the driver remains with the vehicle. Once you have completed the process of unloading your items, the driver must immediately move the vehicle to either Lot 8, Lot 11, or Parking Structure 5 (PS 5). No permit is necessary when using these lots during move-in days. Please be mindful of your time in the unloading zones as these permits have a time limit to allow for a reasonable flow of cars in and out of Lot 2. Once your unloading permit expires, you will leave Lot 2 and proceed to one of the alternate lots or parking structures provided. You will not be able to return to Lot 2 once your unloading time period has ended.

On Thursday, August 22nd from 7 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. a complimentary shuttle will run from the Harper Alumni Center (Lot 8) to Transit Center (near North Village). Parking Structure 5 and Lot 11 are within walking distance of North Village

Yes, on Thursday, August 22nd from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. the Parents and Families Program will host the Hornet Family Lounge in the Riverview Hall Classroom. Families and friends are welcome to come and relax, meet other families, and write a note to their student, which will be delivered to them three weeks after move-in.

Starting on Thursday, August 22nd, The Servery at the Dining Commons will be open. The Servery at the Dining Commons is located in North Village next to the Housing Quad (the entrance is near Draper Hall).

You can find a list of dining venues and their hours on the Sac State Campus Dining webpage.

Once you move in, it is time to get to know your building staff. For assistance with questions and general information, we recommend you begin by seeking out your Resident Advisor (RA) or visit the Front Desk of your residence hall where a Front Desk Assistant (FDA) will be able to assist you. You will also have a required community meeting where you will have another opportunity to ask questions.

Your RA lives on your floor and is a great resource if you have questions about living in North Village, policies, roommates, general advice, and much more.

Our FDAs are students who work at the front desk of each residence hall. FDAs assist residents with visitor registration, work order requests, key & access card issues, and checking out building resources (e.g., kitchen, cleaning, and recreational equipment).

In addition, each residence hall has a Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC). This is a full-time live-in professional that manages the building and supervises the RAs and FDAs. Your RHCs office will be located on the 1st floor of your residence hall. You will get to meet your RHC either at move-in or at your first community meeting.

Yes! Once the official move-in process begins and the weeks following there will be a series of events and meetings that may require your attendance.

For First-time students (incoming first-year, incoming transfer, and incoming graduate students) you will have two (2) required community meetings scheduled. The first required community meeting will occur the evening of move-in on Thursday, August 22nd. During this meeting, the residential community staff and student leaders will review important building and North Village information, room inspections, and other vital updates. Then on Monday, August 26th, the first day of classes, your second required meeting will review Title IX, housing policies and overall community expectations and standard. Within the first 4 weeks of the semesters, you will be expected to complete a roommate agreement with follow-up facilitated by the RA.

First-time students and their families are invited by President J. Luke Wood to attend the 2024 New Student & Family Convocation on the evening of Thursday, August 22nd. For more information see event details below.

Returning students, your residential community staff and student leaders will host one required community meeting scheduled for the evening of Monday, August 26th, the first day of classes. Your meeting will review important building and North Village information, safety procedures, and policies.

We have so much more planned from visits to the lake, to pool parties, and a movie on the quad. We hope to see you at these events as they serve as a great opportunity to meet new people as you settle into your new home. Please review the list of North Village welcome events located below.
